“It is now part of my headcanon that Jordan Peterson is thoroughly well-versed in Bionicle lore. Not gonna lie, I would love to see him do a deep dive on Bionicle’s themes.
“So you see the Matoran and the Toa have got these Three Virtues they live by. And it’s really something when you look at these virtues, man, because they give everything an individual needs to lead a healthy and productive life.
So, the first virtue is Unity, you see, so what that means is that while you may be an individual, you are also part of this greater community around you, and that by working together with your community you can accomplish way more than you ever could on your own. And we see this virtue demonstrated all the time, particularly with the Toa, as you have all these radically different personalities clashing with each other and it’s like ‘why the hell are we even doing this? I should just do this on my own,’ and it’s like NO. You can’t do it on your own. You need help from other people. And by putting aside their differences and working together the Toa are able to defeat Makuta, more or less you know, because he keeps coming back, but basically they beat him.
And so the next virtue we’ve got is Duty, and this is an important one, man, because it’s all about responsibility. It’s this belief that no matter what your station in life is, you have an obligation and a responsibility to do that job to the best of your ability. Doesn’t matter if you’re a Toa fighting off some monster or a Po-Matoran carving a statue, you do your damn best on that job because it’s your duty to see that job through. And there’s no better example of this than Matoro, y’know? Because here’s this guy confronted with the fact that in order for the universe to keep going he has to die, and he’s willing to do it, recreating that image of Christ and His sacrifice, which is really powerful, y’know? This idea of complete sacrifice because someone has to do it. It means a lot, man.
And then the last virtue is Destiny, which is really crucial for tying this whole thing together y’know, because it tells you that your life has purpose and meaning, that you were put on this bloody earth for a reason, and what you do on this earth matters. It gives you that confidence and drive that you need to go out and do what you have to so you can make the world a better place. I think one of the greatest examples of this is Takua, because he’s your classic misfit, y’know? He’s different, adventurous, and a bit of a troublemaker. So Takua is a fantastic metaphor for the dreamers of the world, the people who are right on that edge of society, the ones who push the boundaries. And initially everyone treats Takua as a misfit, y’know that he doesn’t belong in society, and for a long while he believes them, because he’s like ‘what use do I possibly have in society,’ y’know? But by recognizing his destiny as a trailblazer and accepting it, what happens to him? He is transformed into Takanuva, Toa of Light, leading his people through the darkness and the unknown to a better future. It’s incredibly powerful stuff if you think about it.
So you’ve got your Three Virtues: Unity, Duty, and Destiny, giving you a sense of community, responsibility, purpose, and it’s really something y’know because it perfectly encapsulates everything men, and to a slightly lesser extent women, need to be functional and productive in their lives. It’s bloody brilliant, really.””
I’ve never seen anybody comment on this on this video. But does anybody else think the woman in the video sounds like Mikhaila Peterson? That would be an extra layer of funny if it was her.
